Annual Parish Report ...

SOCIETY of SAINT VINCENT de PAUL (SSVP) Nativity of Our Lord Conference | (416) 695-0169 Annual Parish Report ▪ December 2022  Dear Parishioners,  We are asking for your generosity again this Christmas season to bring the love of Christ to the less fortunate in our community.  All year long, you generously donate to the Nativity of Our Lord “Poor Boxes” and we thank you.  The Christmas collection is itself used throughout the entire year to assist the many area families who are facing financial hardship.  Your help has made, and will continue to make, a difference in the lives of these families.  Throughout 2022, the work of Nativity of Our Lord SSVP continued providing food, clothing and other assistance. This December we will be distributing Christmas hampers and other support to 81 families.  This year with your help, we also supported the children of our local neighbour-in-need families with sports programs, including soccer and basketball, as well as registering them at the Marygrove girls and Ozanam boys camps.  In summary, over the past year, Nativity SSVP:  §  Made, on average, 21 visits monthly in our area to more than 100 individuals and families, comprised of approximately 400 adults and children, to find out how we can assist them;  §  Provided on average $2,200 in food voucher assistance each month redeemable at local grocery stores. An average food voucher was $90; §  Distributed $2,160 in clothing vouchers that were used in the Salvation Army and SSVP Stores; §  With the help of the Saint Vincent de Paul Stores Division, supplied our neighbours-in-need with $3,445 towards much needed beds and other furniture; §  Held three “Bundle-Up” weekends which collected donations for the SSVP stores.  The clothing you donate helps SSVP provide clothing free of charge to those in need through a voucher arrangement at the Saint Vincent de Paul store; §  Subsidized 45 neighbourhood children to play local soccer and 22 children to play local basketball; §  Provided spiritual reading material to incarcerated men at the Toronto South Detention Centre.  As well, with your help, we provided Christmas cards to the inmates to send to their loved ones; §  In the spirit of equity, a guiding principle of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, funds are to be shared across SSVP so that no neighbour-in-need is left behind because of the area they live; $5,000 was distributed to other Etobicoke SSVP conferences with greater need and less resources. We would especially like to acknowledge this year’s generous Christmas program donors including our beloved Sisters of the Good Shepherd, Foresters Financial, Toronto Firefighters, people of good will and last but not least our school partners including: Nativity of Our Lord, Mother Cabrini, and St. Gregory Elementary Schools, and Michael Power/St. Joseph and Archbishop Pocock (Mississauga) Secondary Schools.  We would also like to thank our local Chris’ No Frills for accommodating our Christmas hamper purchases again this year. In order to carry on our ministry throughout the 2023 year, we are once again asking for your generosity this December.  An income tax receipt for 2022 donations will be provided from the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Nativity of our Lord Conference.  Donations need to be received by the parish office by noon Dec 31, 2022 in order to receive a donation receipt for the 2022 taxation year.  Contributions to the “Poor Boxes” will also be added to this receipt if the SSVP envelopes were used and/or your own envelope identified each time the donor’s name and/or parish envelope number.  Donations to Nativity SSVP can be made by the following five ways listed below.  Cheques can be made payable to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Nativity of Our Lord Conference.  A SSVP envelope or your own (with SSVP, your name, address, Nativity envelope number, and amount indicated on the envelope) may be used.  How to Donate: 1.    Donate with SSVP marked envelope in the Parish collection baskets during the weekend masses of December 10th/11th. 2.     Drop off donation in one of the SSVP Poor Boxes located in the Church. 3.     Mail or drop off your donation at our parish office at 480 Rathburn Road, Etobicoke, ON  M9C 3S8.  4.     Go on-line to the Society’s Greater Toronto Central Council website www.ssvptoronto.ca to donate by credit card.  Click on the “CanadaHelps.org” button, select option #6-Conference from drop-down, and type conference name in message area: Nativity of Our Lord.  Please note a 4% administration fee is deducted from your donation. 5.     Call our Society’s Greater Toronto Central Council office at (416) 364-5577 and donate by credit card, again stipulating the name of our local Society of Saint Vincent de Paul at Nativity of Our Lord.  There is no administrative fee charged on your donation.  If you have already donated, we thank you for your kind generosity.   The volunteer members of the Nativity SSVP Conference sincerely thank our Pastor, Father Michael, and his assistants for their support of our ministry.  We also thank you, the parishioners of Nativity, for your generous donations.  We wish you and your families God’s blessings, peace and joy during this Christmas season and throughout 2023.   With gratitude, Kathy Haugh, President  The SSVP Annual Report with the 2022 financial summary included is available during December at the Church entrances and/or in the Parish office.

For your sakes Christ became poor (...

“Jesus Christ… for your sakes became poor” (cf. 2 Cor 8:9). With these words, the Apostle Paul addresses the first Christians of Corinth in order to encourage their efforts to show solidarity with their brothers and sisters in need. The World Day of the Poor comes this year as a healthy challenge, helping us to reflect on our style of life and on the many forms of poverty all around us. May this 2022 World Day of the Poor be for us a moment of grace. May it enable us to make a personal and communal examination of conscience and to ask ourselves whether the poverty of Jesus Christ is our faithful companion in life. This November 13th, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul invites you to join us in the celebration of the 6th World Day of the Poor. We pray that this celebration will inspire us to always have the poor with us. The SSVP annual collection will be at Nativity of Our Lord on the weekend of December 10th and 11th.

Description

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a lay Catholic organization whose mission is to live the Gospel message by serving Christ through our neighbors’ in need with love, respect, justice, and joy.

Members of the Society are committed to turning concern into action. Toronto Central Council provides the leadership, coordination, and support required by our Vincentian volunteers and our staff to succeed in that mission.

At Nativity of Our Lord Parish, SSVP helps people experiencing financial need in our community with food vouchers, clothing vouchers, some furniture, and other supports.

We also register neighbourhood children for summer camps (Marygrove for girls and Ozanam for boys) and subsidize local youth sports.

During the Christmas season dozens of “support hampers” are distributed in the community. Bundle-Up weekends which collect gently used clothing and household items are held three times a year in March, May, and November. New ministry initiatives that are in progress include social justice advocacy and friendly visiting.
