Easter Monday and the Easter season

today's readings are Acts 2:14, 22-33, Psalm 16 and Mt. 28: 8-15

Today we celebrate the 2nd day of the Easter Octave, and throughout these 8 days our gospels will feature the various post-resurrection stories in which the disciples encounter the risen Jesus, culminating with the famous encounter between Jesus and the apostle Thomas.  Today's gospel will feature an encounter between Jesus and the two Marys.

The season of Easter, which is 50 days long, gives us plenty of opportunities to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Our 1first readings during this season will be taken from the Acts of the Apostles, which was written by St. Luke and is very much a continuation of his gospel.  As we systematically read through this book, we will hear once again of the growth of the early church, which includes many challenges and difficulties, as well as introducing us to such powerful figures as St. Stephen, the first martyr of the church, and St. Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles.

Finally, the season of Easter will begin to shift its focus towards its end to the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, that very Holy Spirit we first received at our baptism and then was received in its fullness at our Confirmation.

50 glorious days lie ahead of us  - let's savour each one of them.
