today's other readings are Isaiah 55: 10-11 and Psalm 34

The Lord's prayer is the most fundamental prayer for Christians.  Taught to the disciples and to us, it is the only specific prayer in the gospels that Jesus mandates us to pray.

If you consider it closely, you'll notice that the prayer is a series to different statements and requests.  The first two sentences are statements about who our Father is and what He does.  We address Him with a familiar Hebrew name, Abba.  This word is not just the word for father, but is an affectionate term along the lines of "Daddy" or "Papa". Using this word implies that we are called to have that intimate relationship with God that hopefully we had with our own human fathers.

The last three sentences are requests to our Abba - for the food we need and, in a sense, all we need in our daily lives.  We ask Abba for forgiveness, recognizing our need to forgive others.  We ask our Abba to protect us from all temptation and trial and save us from the snares of Satan.

This is a prayer of relationship, of praise, and trust in our Heavenly Abba. No wonder Jesus tells us to pray it.

P.S. the image above is a copy of the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic, the common language of Jesus and the People of Israel 2000 years ago.
